A contractor has died while felling trees yesterday in Devoit, north of Launceston.

Tasmanian police said the incident took place just before 3pm at Motor Road, where road works were being performed.

Police said the man was felling a gum tree when it fell unexpectedly.

The contractor, who was reported to be in his mid 30s, died at the scene.
