A man was performing track maintenance in Sydney’s south when a train hit him, killing him instantly.
The man and his three colleagues were doing maintenance work on the tracks at Kogara when a train approached around 1:00am today.
The tragic accident was captured on video. The city-bound train struck the man, who died at the scene. His three workmates were able to get out of the way.
The chief executive of the state-owned rail corporation said it is making an inquiry why the trains were running while track maintenance was going on.
He says there are safety procedures in place to prevent these accidents.
“The procedures would involve the signaller and also the protection officer in charge of this track gang,” he said.
“All those tapes have been secured and they’ll be listened to as part of the investigation.”
He extended his sympathies to the victim’s family and workmates.
Three passengers were on board the train, which was bound for Sydney.
A guard has been taken to hospital suffering from shock.
Police and Work Cover are also looking into the incident.
