Two workers fatally injured in drilling rig accident

Two workers were killed on Monday in a workplace accident on a drilling rig off Victoria’s southwest coast.

According to the Herald Sun, a 60-year-old man from Scotland and a 32-year-old man from the Northern Territory were drilling a gas well, southeast of Warrnambool when the accident happened.

Australian Workers Union (AWU) state secretary Cesar Melhem said that the victims were struck by a piece of moving machinery.

The National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority (NOPSEMA) is conducting an investigation over the incident.

Forklift driver fatally injured

A worker was fatally injured when he was crushed after being trapped under a forklift at Flemington Markets about 5.20am (AEST) today.

Ninemsn reported that paramedics and firefighters attempted to revive the forklift driver but he died at the scene.

WorkCover is conducting an investigation over the incident.

According to WorkCover, initial investigations found the worker was driving when the forklift rolled on top of him, crushing him to death.

“WorkCover inspectors are on the scene and are conducting inquiries. WorkCover will prepare a report for the coroner,” said WorkCover in a statement.
