The Geelong County Court has fined a construction company and its two directors over a workplace incident for years ago, which killed one worker.
The incident tool place at an Apollo Bay construction site, where the man was working on a partially built floor. It gave way when building blocks weighing more than 10 tonnes were placed on it.
The Echuca-based construction company was fined $350,000 while two of its directors were fined $60,000 each.
WorkSafe acting executive director Stan Kpran said the fatality could have been prevented.
“Some fairly fundamental and basic steps could have prevented this incident and this death and that’s what we see a lot and I think that’s why the law is really reflecting the seriousness of what we’re talking about here,” Mr Krpan said.
“There is a responsibility for company directors under the law to actively look for risks and make sure that these sorts of incidents are prevented.”
