A chemical facility based in Villawood has temporarily shut down after several workers fell ill at the site.

According to AAP, paramedics were called to the facility after fumes were detected outside the building on Monday morning.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said there were a few people who were treated for dizziness, vomiting and nausea but have refused to be taken to the hospital.

The company confirmed that seven of their employees were referred to the hospital for precautionary tests. They also said they have notified the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA), WorkCover and emergency services.

Workers struck with nausea were assured that the chemical leak will have no lasting health effects.

The facility will remain closed while investigation is being conducted.

Chemical leak at oil refinery

A warning for possible health risks was issued to residents of three Geelong suburbs following a chemical leak at the Shell refinery.

The Age reports that the warning was issued at 10pm to residents of Corio, Norlane and North Shore. A spokesman from Shell said that the all-clear was sounded at 2am on Saturday.

Around twenty firefighters responded to the call at the plant at Corio at about 11pm on Saturday when flammable sand used in fuel production leaked from a pipe. Roads and a section of the plant were closed as authorities responded to the leak.

The Department of Health has advised people experiencing symptoms of chemical exposure to call on the “Nurse on Call” service on 1300 606 024.
