Sports reporter and Queensland rugby league legend, Shane Webcke is the new Queensland Safety Ambassador.

The announcement was made on Thursday at steel fabricator Gay Constructions, one of the major winners of the 2014 Work Safe Awards. Mr Webcke will raise awareness on the importance of prioritising safety at work within industry and the community.

Head of Office of Fair and Safe Work, Dr Simon Blackwood said Shane’s personal commitment to work safety will make him a good role model to the entire community.

“Shane’s attitude to work safety is influenced by his own personal story and safety at work is a message he is keen to share with as many people a possible. In Shane’s words, ‘ it ripped a hole on our family’,” said Dr Blackwood.

“Shane has a very personal commitment  to work safety and enormously strong ties to the Queensland rural community. He lives on the Darling Downs, grew up in Toowoomba and was born in Leyburn.

“I am looking forward to working with Shane to highlight some of the great work that government and businesses are doing to continue to cut the workplace death and injury toll in this state.”
