Companies Fined After Trench Collapse in Melbourne’s East

Two companies were fined $30,000 each after an incident where a worker was hurt when a trench collapsed. At the time they were working on a major sewage pipeline project.

Both companies entered a plea of guilty at the Ringwood Magistrate’s Court last Friday to two charges under the OHS Act.

The first was the failure to provide a safe working environment for their own workers and the second was failing to provide a safe working environment for workers of the other company.

The incident happened on the 20th July 2011, see the SafetyCulture report, when the trench collapsed as a worker was exiting, the trench had no shoring or shields in place.
