Asbestos discovered at Opera Sydney House

SafeWork NSW is currently investigating after asbestos has been identified during renovations at the Sydney Opera House on Thursday, 5 October.

According to reports, electrical contractors found potentially asbestos-containing material in woven matting while doing electrical renovations.

They were wearing personal protective equipment when this happened and were not exposed to asbestos.

Tests conducted confirmed that the material was friable asbestos.

Work has ceased in the area as SafeWork NSW reviews safe working procedures to ensure compliance with NSW work health and safety laws.

The discovery comes two months after asbestos was discovered in a tunnel in the Joan Sutherland Theatre.

SafeWork NSW inspectors will monitor the situation.
