A farmer has died after a fire at a cane farm in north Queensland.

The Queensland Cane Growers Organisation said the 59-year-old man was badly injured in a controlled burn of cane trash in a paddock that had been harvested at Coolbie near Crystal Creek on Monday evening.

He was rushed to Townsville Hospital, where he later passed away.

“Farming communities are close and there will be people shocked and hurting across the sugarcane industry today,” CANEGROWERS Herbert River Chairman Michael Pisano said.

“Our condolences go especially to his family, friends and neighbours and CANEGROWERS will provide whatever support we can.”

The circumstances surrounding how the man became caught up in the flames will be investigated by the appropriate authorities.

“This is a tremendously sad and devastating event, reminding us of some of the inherent risks we face in farming and that the safety and welfare of our people is the highest priority at all times,” Mr. Pisano said.
