Asbestos contamination in a Kuranda construction site confirmed

Asbestos has been confirmed at a construction site in Kuranda which was shut down this week.

According to The Cairns Post, the State Government is considering fining the firms involved.

A spokesperson from the Workplace Health and Safety Queensland said the presence of asbestos in the building was confirmed by testing at a laboratory accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities.

“Workplace Health and Safety Queensland is considering enforcement action against applicable duty holders as a result of breaches under the Work Health and Safety Act and Regulation 2011,” said a spokesperson.

The enforcement could be in the form of a fine, a prohibition notice to further restrict work in the area, or a demand could be made to improve their work practices.

SafetyCulture reported on Wednesday that the building site was shut down due to suspected asbestos contamination. Authorities and concerned individuals fear for the health of 15 trainees working on the site.
