NT WorkSafe has recently established a pilot Small Business Safety Advisors (SBSAs) Program to provide one-to-one assistance for small to medium enterprises in improving their work health and safety standards.

The program is designed to improve the capabilities of small businesses to manage their own workplace safety processes.

Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Business Peter Styles said the advisors will work closely with NT businesses on a request basis to provide assistance in improving WHS practices.

“The Northern Territory Government understands the costs and challenges operating a small business can present, particularly understanding and implementing WHS laws and legislative requirements,” said Mr. Styles.

“The Country Liberals Government has a strong focus on providing advice and education to ensure Territory workers return home safely at the end of a day’s work.

“That is why we are committed to supporting local businesses to improve WHS standards through our new Small Business Safety Advisors rather than simply inspecting for non-compliance.

“This program will provide local, small to medium businesses with simple tools and resources that will ultimately improve safety in their workplaces as well as save them time and money.”

Businesses will be provided with checklists for improvements if needed. There will also be presentations and information sessions, group coaching and guidance material.

NT WorkSafe clarified that the Small Business Safety Advisors are support roles, and are not regulatory roles, which means they have no powers under the WHS legislation and all records of visits are confidential.

“The Country Liberals Government has a track record of working together with business to improve their working environment including consulting on and introducing sweeping government procurement changes through the Buy Local Plan; significantly cutting back red tape for business and the SBSAa are another initiative supporting small business to operate safely and efficiently,” said Mr Styles.

“Only the Country Liberals Government through its Framing the Future plan will make the Territory an easier and more efficient place to do business and ensure a prosperous economy for Territorians for generations to come.”
