A taskforce led by WorkSafe and includes the Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) and fire services has commenced the task of removing chemicals stockpiled at eight sites in Epping and Campbellfield.
Once the containers are removed from the sites the contents will be tested and loaded onto trucks designed to safely transport dangerous goods.
The chemicals will be brought to licensed storage facilities and be further assessed before being recycled or destroyed.
The chemicals were first discovered in December when the sites in the northern suburbs were inspected.
It was announced last month that WorkSafe, EPA and other agencies will act on the chemicals discovered at different sites.
The removal operation is expected to take several weeks.
The multi-agency taskforce will continue to oversee the removal of the chemicals.
Investigations into the circumstances that led to the chemicals being stored at the sites are continuing.
